Paris has always been at the forefront of technology. Its sewers, known as Les Egouts de Paris, have been hailed as a model of urban engineering -- and Paris is glad to have you and your family visit them.
This is your chance to follow in the underground footsteps of Jean Valjean, hero of Les Misérables. In the last century, in fact, whole families lived in the sewers -- but you'll be glad you don't. (The stench is not as bad as you might expect, but you won't forget you're in the sewers.) Your tour starts with an interesting video presentation in English, French, German or Spanish which explains Paris' efforts to manage water throughout history. After that, a sewer-worker will lead you through a small fraction of the city's 2100 kilometers of sewers. Be prepared for surprises: in 1984 a small crocodile showed up in the égouts!
