At present, my activity centers on television acting, scriptwriting and English-Korean interpretation. I am also in progress towards a Master’s Degree in bilingual speech/language pathology. In prior years, my experience has included language teaching and international business, as well as a variety of other interests:

 

Language Teaching

Educational Broadcasting System (EBS), Seoul, Korea (1998-present)
Co-hosted such programs as TV TOEIC, College Entrance Test English, and Elementary School Teachers’ English. Appear regularly on programs including What’s Up Doogie?, English Conversation, Radio TOEIC, Survival English, and Listening Special. Author of a series of EBS English Study Guides.

Karuchim Language Institute, Seoul, Korea (1997)
As Academic Supervisor, supervised all foreign teachers and ran weekly teachers’ meetings, recruited and hired new teachers, plus created complete new teacher training and management training courses.

English 2020 Language Institute—Kangdong, Seoul, Korea (1996-1997)
Taught all levels of EFL from children’s phonics to adults’ business English. Students’ ages ranged from 4-60. Moreover, performed above and beyond contractual obligations by:

  • winning the designation of "best teacher" from the Kangdong Branch Director.
  • running two seminars at the ‘97 nation-wide English 2020 teacher training workshop.
  • writing two of the most popular teachers’ manuals ever published by the English 2020 publishing branch. Materials also included student workbooks, readers, and games.

Lewis and Clark College, Portland, OR (1994-1996)
Served as Teaching Assistant in the Chinese 101 and 102 classes. Duties included sole responsibility over the planning and teaching of bi-weekly study groups, as well as assisting the teacher in class and substitute teaching when needed.

Jiu Qiang Adult Education Institute, Beijing, China (1992)
Planned and presented conversational English lessons to a class of twenty-eight native Chinese. Job demanded creative planning of 20 two-hour classes and all classroom materials plus strong public speaking skills and sensitivity to cultural differences.

Individual Tutoring
Tutored the Project Manager, Dept. of Int’l Operations, at a Chinese oil geology company in conversational English. Sessions were twice weekly, over the course of a year in Beijing, China. Also tutored Korean students in English conversation and writing (for 2 years), and tutored American students in Chinese (for 3 years), at Lewis and Clark College.

 

International Business

The David Eaton Group, Boston, MA (1995)
Served as Operations Manager for this intercultural training company. Edited researchers copy into professional 100-page training manuals, executed time-critical office functions, created innovative system of computerized maps, and updated corporate database to current standards.

Computer Expressions, Philadelphia, PA (1992, 1993, 1995)
Translated business correspondence from English into Mandarin Chinese and made phone calls in Chinese, to enable a manufacturer of computer accessories to seek out new suppliers in China. Later served as the New Product Director’s language assistant at a trade show in Taiwan. Interpreted at all business and social meetings. Earned special praise from the company President.

State of N.H. Office of International Commerce, Portsmouth, NH (1993)
Acted as host to delegation of visiting Chinese officials seeking out potential U.S. business partners. Intensive three-day visit involved shared interpretation duties for all business meetings, and evening tour-guide responsibilities.

 

Other Experience & Interests

Independent Travel: Spain, China and the World
Have lived and traveled independently in 25 countries over the past 10 years, honing problem solving and communication skills in a variety of cultures. Travel highlights include summer studies in Spain at age 14, a year-long trip to Beijing at 15 to learn Mandarin Chinese, a trip around the world at age 17 and a semester in Vietnam and China at age 18. Have lived in South Korea for the past 3 years.

Childcare and Child Welfare
Extensive childcare experience; financed travel to Spain and China largely through babysitting jobs. Expert at balancing the pleasant task of amusing children with the need to maintain appropriate discipline. Also served as a volunteer at the Portsmouth Children's Museum, explaining exhibits and helping with arts and crafts projects. Currently volunteering as a translator at Holt Children’s Services, and as a speech therapist at the Seodaemun Rehabilitation Center.

Currently working on an M.A. in Speech Language Pathology with an emphasis on com- munication disorders of bilingual children. Courses are conducted in Korean, and no other foreign students have ever met the high standards of admittance to the program.
